The first documents to depict pentacles were the 1500s grimoires called the Heptameron and the Key of Solomon. Modern Thelema, Golden Dawn and other works of Alister Crowley used the symbol in ritual and as a talisman. The five points represent the five elements: earth, air, fire, water and spirit. The upward-pointing star is a representation of the triumph of the spirit over matter and earthly desires.
