Bast is the ancient Egyptian Goddess of protection and cats. She is one of the warrior daughters of Ra. Ra sent her to fight Apep (cosmic serpent of chaos). She became an honored and worshiped feline deity when the cult of Bastet started in the town of Bubastis, located in the Eastern Delta in Lower Egypt ( around 3,200 BCE). Bubastis remained an important town from Old Kingdom through the Late Period. Today the town is called Tell Basta and Bast is worshipped worldwide as a protector of pregnant women in segments of the New Age Movement.
